Mayle Talks About Tablertown to Honor Juneteenth
The nation paused to honor Juneteenth on Wednesday.
The Minority Business Resource Network, the Muskingum County Social Justice Coalition, the Muskingum County NAACP, and the Muskingum County Library System partnered to host a special guest speaker at the John McIntire Library to celebrate.
“I will be talking about a place called Tablertown, which was from my ancestries, and probably some of my other books that I have and my paintings I have and the paintings have been there like 20 years I’ve had them and just been in my house and never brought them out or anything. So one day one of the ladies came by and she was looking at them and she says ‘well you know what you know, you should display those,” and I said ‘oh wow,’ you know how that is. Anyway, I’m just happy to be here today,” said Jo Ellen Mayle, author and guest speaker.
This is only one of many events that are held throughout the country as Juneteenth celebrations gain more prevalence each year bringing more awareness to the historical significance in America’s story of freedom.
“I think it’s wonderful, I think it should’ve been done a long time ago which is like it was years ago when they didn’t tell them they were free. It took all this time, you know, to bring the freedom to forth to the people that, you know, that really needed to know the story and the history of this long life thing,” Mayle said.
Some of Mayle’s books include “The Tattered Wishing Well” and On Red and “Muddy Roads: Memories of Tablertown USA”.
