Stone Academy to Host Mark Twain

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Stone Academy was built in 1809 and has served in shaping community involvement, public influence, and political ideology.

Muskingum County History Board of Trustees President Peter Cultice shared the historical significance of the Stone Academy in addition to announcing some events that are scheduled to take place in the near future.

“One, we have programs for the remainder of the year, September, October and November,” Cultice said. “We have a program coming up tomorrow evening… or Wednesday evening, 5:30 p.m. here at the Stone Academy. ‘Mark Twain in Ohio.’ A gentleman from the Cleveland area is coming down and re-acting Mark Twain, much like how Hal Holbrook did during his lifetime.”

The Stone Academy is part of the Muskingum County History Board,  which through free seasonal tours and events, showcase multiple sites in the Putnam neighborhood that have borne a significant influence on society.

“Mark Twain was quite a… great author for one reason, and two, he almost made Ohio his home. He was a journalist and he almost bought a (news)paper or became part owner of a paper in Ohio. And if that deal would have gone through, he would have likely made Ohio his home. And we can learn about that history. His connection to Ohio,” Cultice said.

In addition to the Mark Twain event, the History Board will also be hosting a similar event on September 26th, at the Putnam Presbyterian Church that will showcase the role that Putnam Women played in shaping the social and political landscape during the mid 19th century.
