One Win Away from State Title, Maysville Relies On More Than Just Its Two Stars

SOUTH ZANESVILLE, OH

Back in the state championship game yet again, Maysville basketball is coming synonymous with postseason success.

While Juniors Gator Nichols and Jordyn Watson have been on this stage before, the rest of the Panthers are experiencing the bright lights for the very first time.

“Yeah, you know, I think we’ve got seven or eight guys that can really pass, shoot and dribble” says head coach Dave Brown. “So when you have to guard everybody on the floor, it makes it tough defensively, and everybody has stepped up at some point during this tournament run, and we’ll need the same on Friday afternoon.”

While we know what Nichols and Watson bring to the table, game in and game out, Kade Rock, Landon Iden, Kane Roehrig, and even Gavin Ferguson off the Maysville bench have been key contributors during this tournament run.

“I don’t think there’s a lot of pressure” says Rock. “But it’s also nice to be in that role, to be in the position to make a play, change the game, and just be on a team like this.”

Iden adds, “The excitement has been unreal, and I feel like the expectation has grown larger than what it was last year, and I feel like this is the expectation now here at Maysville. I feel like we’ve just been playing at an unreal standard.”

“I think we’ve just done a good job in believing in ourselves and just getting one percent better every day, and that’s what’s got us back into this position” claims Roehrig. “I’m super excited, this is a great opportunity, and I would say it happens once in a lifetime, but we’ve been here twice.”

“I’m more excited than anything else. It’s a dream come true” adds Ferguson. “I think if we just play our game, listen to our coaches, and watch the scouting report, I think we’ll be fine and I think we’ll like our outcome at the end of the night.”

This might be many of the Panthers’ first time in the limelight of a memorable tournament run, but you would never know it, as they are eyeing one more win to secure the ultimate prize for Maysville against Glenville on Friday afternoon in Dayton.

You can tune into z92 radio starting at 3:45 pm for all the coverage, as Maysville is 32 minutes away from a Division IV state championship.
