What Ohio Teens Should Know About Work Permits
ZANESVILLE, OH – Summer is quickly approaching and many Ohio teens are likely planning to use the break to earn some money as well as some life long job skills.
However, if they don’t take the necessary steps to obtain a work permit then their summer excitement could quickly turn sour.
Julie Metzger, the workforce administrator with Ohio Means Jobs, said it’s a very easy process for teens and parents to obtain a work permit.
“You can download the application off of the Ohio Department of Commerce and once you download the application, you simply fill the application out, it would be the student or the minor, parents you have to have proof of identification,” Metzger said. “Then once you have that, you simply take that completed application, you have to have a physical, once that is completed then you take that completed application with the physician’s documentation to the school. They make sure everything is intact and then they offer the work permit.”
Metzger said there are a ton of benefits for teens who go through the work permit process for a summer job.
She said they will be able to work on their communication, learn how to become financially responsible and how to manage their time.
“I think other benefits are the youth population learn what we have. What businesses or industries we have here in Muskingum County,” Metzger said. “Believe it or not, a lot of people don’t know that we have Conn’s Potato Chips out there that produce potato chips right here in Zanesville, a lot of kids don’t know that. It’s good for them to explore Muskingum County and see what’s out there.”
