SOUTH ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Area high schools are becoming more diverse in their workforce development educational programs.

Maysville High School Senior Bailey Silver placed second in the state level Health Occupations Students of America Phlebotomy Competition, which was held last month in Toledo. The achievement qualifies her to compete in the International HOSA competition next month in Nashville, Tennessee.

“Yeah, it was really cool,” Silver said. “We got there on a Wednesday night and we got to go to like a baseball game, so that was kind of fun. We hung out after we got checked in. And then Thursday was our long competition day. I competed and I had my skills event in the morning. And then went to some workshops in the afternoon. And then that night we had like a pickleball tournament and dance. And the next day was awards. So I kind of just went and did my best at what I learned from all my studying and stuff and then… yeah, I placed second. So that was pretty cool.”

Silver said her father’s longtime struggle with cardio issues is what created her interest in healthcare and that she plans to attend Muskingum University’s Nursing Program this fall. But in-between is a high school graduation and an international competition in Tennessee.

“Yeah so, it’s in Nashville in the middle of June,” Silver said. “I don’t really know what to expect, kind of like I really didn’t know what to expect with state but I am excited. We’re bringing one of our other HOSA members so she can kind of attend the leadership conferences and stuff. So, we’re excited to be there and we’ll see what it’s all about. I’m just going to study a lot and try to do my best.”

Maysville hosted a Red Cross Blood Drive event inside their middle school gymnasium today, which demonstrated a future career path for the students who are enrolled in the school’s inaugural healthcare studies program.
