Nature Oriented Summer Camp

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Camp Canopy is an outdoor oriented summer camp that offers high schoolers an educational get-a-way to Leesville Lake’s Camp Muskingum.

Ohio Department of Natural Resources Service Forester and Camp Canopy Co-Director Jeremy Scherf described Camp Canopy and explained its relevance.

“Camp Canopy is a week-long summer camp for high school age kids. We focus on the outdoors, forestry and wildlife management,” Scherf said. “It’s been going on since 1950. This year it is June 8th through the 13th. I actually attended camp when I was in high school and kind of grew my love for the outdoors. Our goal is to teach the kids more about natural resources management, forestry and wildlife and all the other things around that. But also show them what career paths are out there.”

Campers will be introduced to foresters and wildlife biologists from across the state, who will lead them through the woods, while pointing out many of the fine details that nature has on display.

“They’re going to learn how to identify 20 different trees. They’re going to learn about timber harvesting and forest management and how we do it and also why. There’s going to be a class on raptors this year, wild edibles and learn what they can find in the forest to eat. We’re doing one on forest fires this year, both learning how we fight them but also how we can use fire in forest management. We also, new this year, have a timber sports demonstration,” Scherf said.

The camp is geared toward outdoor oriented students, who are entering 9th grade all the way to graduating seniors and attendees must register in advance. For further details and to secure your spot, you can visit Camp Canopy online.
