Cambridge recognized as John Glenn’s birthplace

CAMBRIDGE, Ohio – Many know that American Veteran, Astronaut and Senator John Glenn’s hometown was New Concord, Ohio. However, not many realize he was actually born in Cambridge, Ohio.
The City of Cambridge unveiled a marker commemorating Cambridge as the birthplace of John Glenn. Cambridge Mayor Tom Orr said this marker was a collaborative effort between the City of Cambridge and the John and Annie Glenn Museum.
“It was brought up by a young man to kind of flag the fact that we never had that sign,” Orr said. “It seemed like the timing was never perfectly right, I think it is now and here on Southgate coming into the City of Cambridge. We’re going to unveil a very special tribute to John Glenn and his wife today.”
The sign took about six months to plan and design after New York Graduate Student of St. John’s University, Adam Sackowitz realized there was nothing to honor Cambridge’s role in John Glenn’s story.
“He began his career in public service here in Cambridge, he signed his military papers here, and Cambridge is an integral part to the John Glenn story,” Sackowitz said. “John Glenn in many ways one of the greatest Ohioans whoever lived, one of the greatest Americans whoever lived, and he needs to be fully honored.”
The sign can be seen on Ohio State Route 209 also known as Southgate Parkway off of Interstate 70.
