Asthma on the Rise in Springtime

Many residents are looking forward to spring, but it is not a good time of year for people with asthma.

Dr. Joseph Bullock with Midwest Allergy says he sees many people come into his office in the springtime with asthma symptoms due to pollens in the air.

"The symptoms of asthma would be coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, especially on viral infections, cold air and exercise would trigger it, but also allergens can trigger it as well," says Dr. Bullock.

There has also been a dramatic increase in the amount of children developing asthma. Doctor Bullock says that could be happening for several reasons.

"We think that people have lack of breast feeding, number one, which prevents allergy. Number two, increased numbers of animals in the house and once again, the fact that we have tighter houses that keep the dust mites in, these factors seem to increase the incidence of asthma and allergies in general," says Dr. Bullock.

Doctor Bullock says asthma is a serious disease and can be deadly if untreated. He says there are no effective over-the-counter medications, so if you or your child are experiencing asthma symptoms it is important to see your family doctor.
