Ohio Department of Natural Resources Hosts Ice Fishing Class

HEBRON, Ohio – If you don’t like to just sit at home on winter days, this hobby could be perfect for you.
Ice fishing is the practice of catching fish through an opening in the ice of a frozen body of water. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources hosted a class at the Hebron State Fish Hatchery all about this activity. Experts discussed planning and preparation, equipment, and ice fishing safety.
“We had an ice fishing clinic to inform the public about ice fishing safety, rules and regulations, tactics, and things to be aware of if you were to fish on any of the Ohio State waters more specifically about Buckeye Lake ice fishing,” said Outdoor Skills Specialist, Jordan Phillips.
Phillips said safety is the most important aspect of learning about ice fishing. But aside from the technical features of the activity, ice fishing gets people outdoors and is an enjoyable affair.
“Ice fishing is a great way to get outside during the winter months. It’s a fun sport, it doesn’t necessarily need to be cold. It’s a great way to pull some fish through the ice, and actually have a good time being outdoors,” he said.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources likes to offer a wide range of educational programs. They host other clinics such as deer butchering, frogging, and fly fishing.
