Alvin Fuller

Alvin Howard Fuller, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, went to be with the Lord on February 3, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at the farm where he was born. Alvin was welcomed into the world on February 6, 1943, at the family homestead in Old Washington, Ohio, as the son of the late Howard Burton and Effie Jane (Thatcher) Fuller.
Alvin graduated from Old Washington High School in 1961. After briefly attending The Ohio State University, he returned home to take over the family farm following the passing of his father. A man of dedication and hard work, he held various roles throughout his life, including working for R&F Coal Company and as a long-distance trucker. However, his true passion and greatest joy came from farming alongside the love of his life, Doris Evelyn Apperson, whom he married on April 12, 1968.
Alvin was a man of faith and an active member of Salt Fork Baptist Church and the Guernsey Gospel Jubilee Association for many years. Alvin was also an avid gardener who believed in gardening at scale—no small plot with just a few tomato plants, but a “go big or go home” approach with 100+ tomato plants and plenty of green beans. Later in life, his passion shifted to flowers, creating beautiful displays all over his farm. Many people would stop or call to tell him how beautiful his flowers were, which he truly loved.
A firm believer in education, Alvin valued the power of knowledge and was a steadfast advocate for his daughters and granddaughter. He raised them with high expectations, instilling the importance of ambition, a strong work ethic, and grit.
Alvin is survived by his devoted wife of over 56 years, Doris, and their three daughters: Evelyna (Tom Moore) of Newark, Sabrina (Rick Shutek) of Old Washington, and Deanna (Bob Schultz) of Streetsboro. He also leaves behind his granddaughter, Sara, currently attending the College of Wooster. Additional surviving family members include his sister-in-law, Delores (Richard Carter), his brother-in-law, John (Vickie Pavlik) Apperson, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will forever hold his memory close.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday (February 8, 2025) from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Black-Epperson Funeral Home, Byesville, where funeral services will follow at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Brian Hollis officiating.
Alvin will be laid to rest at Old Washington Cemetery.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Genesis healthcare providers, as well as Dr. Raul Hernandez, whose dedicated care sustained Alvin throughout his battle with cancer and other health challenges over the years. Special thanks are also extended to the Antrim, Lore City, and Old Washington Volunteer Fire Departments, whose members responded with compassion and care to help during his final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to these volunteer fire departments in Alvin’s honor: 1) Antrim Community Volunteer Fire Department, 20217 Cadiz Road, Freeport OH 43973; 2) Lore City Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 234, Lore City OH 43755; or 3) Old Washington Community Fire Department, 221 Beymer Street, Old Washington OH 43768.
