ZANESVILLE, OH – Zanesville families will have the opportunity to have fun while learning a little history this weekend at the Muskingum 250 Community Movie Night. The free movie night open to all ages will be held Friday June 27 in the Elson Hall Auditorium at Ohio University Zanesville at 6:30 p.m.
The Muskingum County 250 Committee, an organization dedicated to preparing for the nationwide celebration of the United States’ 250th Anniversary, is teaming up with the Muskingum Library System and Ohio University Zanesville to feature the 1957 movie Johnny Tremain. Showing movies that draw attention to the history of Muskingum county is one way the committee hopes to get families excited for the commemoration next year.
“We have identified a few movies that are kind of classics or very interesting or thought provoking, and this month’s movie is called Johnny Tremain,” Executive Director of Muskingum County History Dr. Larisa Harper said.
“It was made in 1957, it’s a Disney film, very family friendly, and it gives the story of a young boy who’s about 14 and how he learned how to grow up and how to understand what was going on in the country around him,” Harper said.
According to Harper, Zanesville played a big part in the American Revolution. Zane’s Trace was the first federally funded road from Wheeling West Virginia to Maysville Kentucky, which came directly through Zanesville.
“The founder of this city and our county played a huge part in moving pioneers from the east coast to the west. And so our area plays a part in being that kind of trailblazing leader into the western part of America,” Harper said.
