MCCONNELSVILLE, Ohio–The Ohio Department of Natural Resources announced the arrival of a newborn bison calf at the Appalachian Hills Wildlife Area in Morgan County.

The baby bison was born in the early morning hours of July 20th.

Bison calves are also known as red dogs for their distinct cinnamon coloring which will eventually turn into the dark brown color you see on the mature bison.

The ODNR Division of Wildlife added the bison as the stars of its new visitor center in McConnelsville. They highlight the importance of conservation and habitat management.

You can check out the newborn and its herd at the Appalachian Hills Visitors Center between the hours of 10 am – 6 pm, Wednesday through Sunday.
