OSHP Urges Safe Labor Day Travel

ZANESVILLE, OH – Before you hit the road this Labor Day weekend, troopers have one request… make sure safety comes along for the ride.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says troopers will have an increased presence on Ohio roadways throughout the holiday weekend. The Zanesville Post is reminding drivers to stay vigilant, buckle up, put down distractions, and never drive impaired.

“With the increase in travel during the holiday weekend, we encourage motorists to drive sober, don’t be distracted, and always wear your seatbelt while you’re operating a motor vehicle.” Sgt. Kyle Shirer with the Zanesville OSHP, said.

With more people expected on the roads, troopers say it’s also important to allow yourself a little extra time, be patient with other drivers, and avoid rushing to your destination.

“Allow for more time to travel with the increased traffic. And make sure you’re not distracted, that you wear your seatbelts, and driver sober.” Sgt. Shirer said. “We’ll be in full force all weekend long. So, you’ll see us out on the roads.”

Last Labor Day reporting period, 27 people were killed in 23 crashes across Ohio, that’s a 35% increase from the year before. Of those fatalities, 17 deaths in 15 crashes involved a driver impaired by alcohol or drugs. If you plan to drink, make a plan for a sober ride before the celebration starts.
